One of the best ways to become familiar with any one of Portland’s unique neighborhoods is to walk it. Walk it up one side and down the other. Walk it in early morning, at mid-afternoon, and in the evening.
This Urban Loop–south on NW 9th Ave and then north on NW 10th Ave.–takes you past several Pearl District landmarks (Renaissance Inn, Ecotrust Building, World Foods, Fuller’s Diner, Pearl Bakery, Buddha Building, Nuvrei Bakery, Powell’s Books, Jamison Square, Christopher David’s, Lovejoy Bakers, Tanner Springs Park) and several Downtown landmarks as well (Jake’s Grill, SW 9th & Alder Food Cart Pod, Park Avenue West Tower, Director’s Park).
The NW 9th-NW 10th Loop is an interesting, easy, and very tasty 3-mile walk with several choices for coffee and pastries along the way. You could, for instance, grab an espresso and Almond Pound Cake at Pearl Bakery on your way south and a cappuccino and handful of itsy-bitsy Canelé at Nuvrei Bakery on your way north.
Which I did. Of course.
Also, if you find yourself flagging on the way back, just hop the Portland Streetcar, which travels north on NW 10th.
It takes about an hour to fast-walk the 36 blocks. But I rarely do that, because of the aforementioned shops and the camera that never stops clicking. On today’s route, I captured 100 images, the best of which you can see in the photo gallery below.
